Shofar November 2007
From Our President:
Dear Friends,
After High Holiday services this year, I heard from just a couple of congregants that they were not aware of the change in the order of services on the First day of Rosh Hashanah. The change was we inserted the musaf service into the shachrit and eliminated most of the repetition. This was the second year for this change and I believe the service ran smoothly and was completed earlier. However, I have asked the office to include notification of this change when announcing High Holiday services next year. If you care to voice your opinion, pro or con, for or against, please do not hesitate letting me know.
If you were unable to attend the Congregation meeting on October 14th, the Board’s recommendation that the Rabbi’s contract not automatically renew for another five years was approved. There was a very impressive turnout, over 120 individuals attended and anyone who wished to speak was given the opportunity. As indicated in the recommendation, we will be seeking Congregation input as to the length of the Rabbi’s contract by holding Congregation meetings. The first of these will be held November 11th at 7:00 P.M., baby sitting will be provided. I have also placed on the calendar to hold another Congregation meeting on December 2nd also at 7:00 P.M. The Board’s objective is to negotiate a new contract with the Rabbi by January 31st and bring it before the Congregation for ratification at the May Congregation meeting. Congratulations to Men’s Club, and Joe Sontowski in particular, for another successful Scott Mackler 5k Run/Walk on October 7th.
Last month I told you that we had installed a much needed security system. As part of this system you should be aware that we have installed a panic bar on the left front outside door (as you face the synagogue). This door no longer opens from the outside. When both doors are locked the office staff is now able to remotely unlock this door.
This month, I would like to profile two members of the Temple Board:
Sandy Novick, Sisterhood President-
This is Sandy’s first year as sisterhood president. Born and raised in New Jersey, Sandy met and married Steve, 37 years ago, while pursuing a teaching degree. Sandy is a homemaker with three grown children. A happily involved member of TBE since joining over 18 years ago. Sandy enjoys people and nature.
Jill Di Sciullo- Member At Large-
Jill is married and lives in Fair Hill Maryland with her husband Vince, son Marc, one on the way to be named later, and “a slew of animals”. Jill and Vince joined TBE 4 years ago, coinciding with the birth of their son. She is a domestic relations attorney with Morris James in Wilmington. Jill believes it is important to be connected and involved in our Jewish community. She finds TBE a warm welcoming atmosphere that fosters ones ability to get involved at any level.
I remind you that if you have any ideas or suggestions, please do not hesitate contacting any one of the board members. Please feel free to contact me via email, or by phone (302-234-6529).
B’Shalom,
Jay Stellenberg

RELIGIOUS
SCHOOL
From Our Principal...
We had a lovely Simchat Torah and Consecration service on October 4th. Our Aleph students sang beautifully and beamed as they entered this new phase of their Jewish education. It was exciting for everyone as the Torah was unrolled through the whole sanctuary and social hall, and the Klezmer band entertained us later while we sang and danced. Thank you to all who were involved with the service and to all the parents who helped with the Religious School dinner before the service.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes from Mrs. Romao’s Dalet Class...
One day, a non-Jew came before Hillel and said he would convert to Judaism if the great teacher could explain the whole Torah while standing on one foot. After thinking about Hillel’s summary of the Torah – “What is hateful to you, do not do to others” – as a kind of motto that expresses an important Jewish value to live by, the Dalet students came up with their own mottos. By the way…they presented them on one foot! Below you will find some brilliant mottos and values that prove to us the faith we can definitely have in the future of our youth. Stop by the classroom to see them all ~~~~~
Respect people, even if you don’t always agree with them…Bridget
Don’t just sit there, be adventurous…Kory
Don’t pay more attention to your friends than your family, because your family will be with you forever, maybe more than a friend…Morgan Cohen
If it makes you successful, go ahead and do it, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone…Rebecca Tousman
Be thoughtful of other’s feelings…Shoshanna
Live your life the way you want, but treat people you meet, including family and friends with respect, patience and honesty…Emma Halbert
Stand up for what you think is right, no matter how many people oppose your beliefs…Neill Squadron
I shall be a friend to somebody who needs one…Sydney
Never start a war, unless you have a very good reason…Ben
Study the Torah and respect others. That is my philosophy of life…Sam
If you are going to walk on thin ice, you might as well dance…Emily
Shoot for the moon, because the worst you can do is hit the stars…Johanna
If someone does something nice for you, do something nice for them…Amanda
Be yourself and don’t change to seem better, and don’t let another person drag you down…Ethan

News from the Hai Class...
The Hai class will be sponsoring the
3rd Annual TBE Talent Show, which will be held on Sunday, December 16 at 10:30am, during religious school. This year, the students chose to donate the money they collect to two charities close to the hearts of our class community: The M.S. Society and The American Diabetes Association.
There are two ways you can help. First, come see us at our table during the Hanukkah Bazaar and purchase raffle tickets. Second, participate in, or come see, the talent show on December 16th. The talent show is always a special and fun event that everyone looks forward to. Show off your talent - no matter what you do - the congregation will love it!
Members of the Hai class will be coming to the classrooms soon to answer questions and hand out entry forms. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, December 16th. Have fun, see all the talent our kids and parents possess, and fulfill the mitzvah of Tikkun Olam.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
REPORT CARDS...
Report cards for Aleph - Hai students will be coming home the beginning of November. You will notice that we have changed our format, in order to provide parents with more information. Please sign the envelope and return it as soon as possible. Feel free to add any comments or questions at that time.

“PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE”
Our annual Needy Family Drive is under way as we reach out to the community to help make the holidays special for those who are less fortunate. Chairpeople, Sy & Sydell Glassner, have already begun sorting and organizing. Following is a list of the sizes and needs of our adopted families.
Some Temple members have asked about cash donations. They are always welcome and needed to buy mattresses.
Donations are due no later than November 27th, but it would be very helpful if donations were brought in earlier. Please mark your bags/boxes with type of clothes (boys shirts 8-10, girls 6-10, women’s 12-14) and size if possible or by family.
Dalet and Hai students can sign up to earn mitzvah credit to help sort shoes and food on Sunday, December 4th.
We need children’s clothing, all sizes, men’s, ladies & children’s outerware, TOYS - especially baby & pre-school, books - household goods, furniture & linens. Please no stuffed animals except for Disney & Sesame Street.

OUR WEEKLY
MI SHEBERACH LIST
Our policy for adding loved ones or friends to the Mi Sheberah list is to keep them on for one month. At that time you must call to have them kept on for another month. If we do not hear from you we will remove them from the list. We have not really been strict with that policy. However, with the list becoming so long and with so many names to read at services we are going to start re-enforcing the policy starting November 1st.

From BBYO...
The B'nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO) I.T. convention was a great success. We had a turn out of over one hundred new and enthusiastic teenagers. Our services and the weekend programs were amazing. BBYO would like to thank the whole TBE community for being supportive and flexible. We would especially like to thank our congregants and friends who opened their homes to us. Without all of you, our I.T. weekend could not have happened. Special thanks go to the Swerens, Nortons, Stapens, Roths, and Liz Rosman. Thank you again to everyone.

Sandy Novick
------------------------------------------------------------- From
Our Men’s Club President: Please
join us for a special breakfast on Sunday November 11 at 9:30AM, as the Men's
Club and Sisterhood join forces. Competition in the kitchen will be spirited,
and the food is sure to be especially tasty. We apologize for running short on
some of your favorite items at the October breakfast, our buyers took notice,
and we will be especially attentive to prevent shortages in upcoming
Breakfasts. This month's speaker is sure to be interesting, a massage
therapist. Imagine your spouse mastering the basics of massage! Let
me also wish a hearty Mazel Tov to the many runners who took on the formidable
heat and the many steep hills at the Scott Mackler Run last month. Despite the
steaming midsummer temperatures, the race was a success. I thank all the
workers, sponsors, and especially Joe and Lynn Sontowski for again organizing
perhaps the premier ALS fundraising event in the United States. We expect to
raise $70,000 for ALS this year and for this we should all feel proud. By
the time you read this, these events will be history, but Saturday November 3,
TBE visits the Delaawre Theatre Company to see The Diary of Anne Frank. Having
visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam last summer, I am deeply impressed
with this brave young girl's remarkable efforts, and the powerful resonance of
her words. We also
hit the pavement on Sunday November 4 for Adopt-a-Highway, again, thanks to Joe
Sontowski for his tireless organizational efforts. Thanks
and best regards, Tom
